December Overwhelm: Simple Strategies to End the Year Strong

ree

What does December mean to you?

For many, it's a season of joy, celebration, giving, and well-deserved breaks. But some of us feel differently when this month approaches.

It's almost like the weight of the entire year you've been carrying suddenly becomes real. Tangible. Sensed and felt in every part of your being. And dealing with it all? That's the hard part.

Here's what makes December uniquely challenging: it sneaks up on you. One day you're managing fine, and the next you're lying awake at 2am mentally reviewing everything that's landed on your plate.

Recognising Overwhelm Before It's Too Late

Here's the thing about overwhelm: it doesn't announce itself. It creeps into different parts of your life quietly, and when left unchecked, it can sneak you right into burnout territory before you even realize what's happening.

So, let's talk about the signs, because recognizing them early is half the battle.

Maybe you've noticed you're more tired than usual, even after a full night's sleep. Or you're getting headaches more often. Perhaps your shoulders feel like they're permanently glued to your ears, or your stomach's been a bit off lately.

These aren't random. There's an intrinsic link between your organs, glands, and nervous system that goes out of whack when you accumulate stress. Your body's basically tapping you on the shoulder saying "Hey, we need to slow down here."

On the mental side, things might feel foggy. You're reading emails but not actually absorbing them. Making decisions feels harder than it should. You walked into the kitchen three times before remembering why you went there. You're in conversations but mentally it's all a blur.

And emotionally? Small things that normally wouldn't bother you suddenly feel like a big deal. You might snap at your partner or child over something minor or feel edgy most of the time. (No judgment, we've all been there.)

Why This Time of Year Hits Different

December overwhelm is basically trying to fit two months of stuff into four weeks. You've got:

  • Work projects that need wrapping up

  • Holiday planning and shopping

  • Social events you said yes to back in October

  • That nagging feeling about goals you didn't quite hit this year

  • Oh, and people want you to start planning for next year already

It's a lot. And it's completely normal to feel stretched thin.

Small Shifts That Actually Help

Good news: you don't need to overhaul your entire life. Let's keep this simple.

Give yourself permission to postpone things. Not everything needs to happen before December 31st. Look at your list and ask, "What could honestly wait until January?" Then move it. Future-you will thank present-you.

Protect your downtime like it's a doctor's appointment. Even 15 minutes of doing nothing. Sitting with your coffee. Taking a short walk. Staring out the window. Your brain needs these little resets.

Let some things be "good enough." I know you want everything to be perfect, but right now? Getting it done is better than getting it perfect. Save your A-game energy for the stuff that truly matters.

Find your calm anchor. This could be five deep breaths before you start your day. A quick stretch between meetings. Ten minutes with a reflective book before bed. Pick one thing that helps you feel grounded and do it consistently. (I love meditating - it's like a simple and strategic recharge hack.)

Set some boundaries with your inbox. You don't have to respond to everything immediately. Really. The world won't end if you check email three times a day instead of thirty.

Delegate some tasks. You don't have to do everything yourself. Look at your list and ask, "Who else could handle this?" Whether it's at work or at home, passing on tasks isn't failing - it's being smart about your energy.

What Others Have Experienced

Don't just take my word for it. Here's what people have shared after their sessions:

"I feel alive - I want to feel like this every day."

"Something shifted inside me after our first session, and I started waking up earlier naturally - this wasn't an effort anymore."

"I haven't shared this specific matter with anyone else - you created a safe space for me."

"I feel so much better after this."
